Hama numbers its colors instead of naming them
Hama's system is numeric and the numbers are printed on the bags: 01 is White, 18 is Black, 27 is Pastel Green. This tool carries 78 of them, 01 through 78, and the materials list prints that number next to every color — so what you read off the chart is exactly what you ask for in a shop.
Midi is the 5mm range
This page targets Hama midi, the 5mm bead sold in the classic tubs, on the same 5mm pitch and the same 29×29 square pegboard as Perler. Hama also makes mini at 2.5mm and maxi at 10mm; the grid you build here works for all three, but the finished piece is half the size in mini and double in maxi.
Pastels, neons and metallics are all inside the 78
Hama's card is unusually broad in its specialty families and they are all matched against here: five pastels, five neons, and Gold, Copper, Bronze and Silver. European color names turn up too — Petrol, Bordeaux, Anthracite, Marble Grey — which is worth knowing if you search for a bag by name instead of by number.
Hama compared with Perler and Artkal
Perler is the North American counterpart and the nearest equivalent: same 5mm midi bead, same 29×29 board, so a Hama chart transfers bead for bead at exactly the same finished size. The differences are the card and the labeling — Perler carries 88 colors here against Hama's 78, and it names them rather than numbering them, so the same design produces a longer and differently worded shopping list. Artkal is not interchangeable in size. The A series carried here is a 2.6mm bead against Hama midi's 5mm, so an identical grid finishes at roughly a quarter of the area, and it will not sit on a Hama board because the peg spacing does not line up. Hama bead pattern FAQ
What does the number on a Hama bag mean?
It is Hama's color id, and it is the same number this tool prints in the materials list: 01 is White, 18 is Black, 27 is Pastel Green. Unlike a name, the number is unambiguous across languages, which is why both Hama charts and Hama shops work from it.
Why does Hama have 78 colors here when Perler has 88?
Because the two manufacturers publish different-sized midi cards, and this tool carries what each one actually offers rather than padding them to match. In practice it means a photo converted on Hama will sometimes merge two very close Perler shades into a single Hama number. On flat art and logos you will not notice; on a photographic gradient you occasionally will.
Is this Hama midi, mini or maxi?
Midi, the 5mm bead. Hama mini is 2.5mm and maxi is 10mm. The grid is the same in all three — a 29-bead-wide design stays 29 beads wide — but midi finishes around 14.5cm, mini around 7.3cm and maxi around 29cm.
Can I mix Hama and Perler beads on the same board?
Physically yes: both are 5mm midi and both fit a standard 29×29 pegboard. Be aware that the two brands' whites, greys and skin tones are not identical shades, so mixing them inside one flat area of color tends to show once it is ironed. Mixing across separate areas is fine.
Are Hama's pastel, neon and translucent beads included?
The pastels, the neons and the metallics are all inside the 78 colors matched here. Translucent, glow-in-the-dark and glitter beads are not: how they look depends on what is behind them and on the light, so a flat hex swatch would give you a misleading match. Pick a solid color as a stand-in and swap it by hand when you peg.
Can I convert a Hama pattern to Perler codes?
Yes. Switch the brand selector to Perler and the entire materials list is re-matched against Perler's 88 colors while the grid stays exactly where it is. Because both are 5mm midi, the finished size does not change — only the shopping list is rewritten.
